I'll talk about this more in the next post. Unfortunately CoolTerm cannot drip feed the machine, basically because it does not understand the DC1/DC3 control characters that the Fadal sends to control data flow.

Then on your computer go to 'Connection' -> 'Send Textfile', choose your gcode file and hit ok.Īnd that's it! The file should send over without any issues. Type in the command 'TA,1' (Load from Tape, default options) Press the 'Manual' button until you see the 'Enter Next Command' prompt. (it will look something like "Repleo-PL2303-000012FD"). Then select the USB-Serial adapter from the list. If you want to transfer a file to the machine memory there is a great solution that's also FREE called 'CoolTerm':ĭownload CoolTerm, create a new 'connection' with the correct settings (7 data bits, 1 stop bit, even parity, match baud rate with machine).

With the updated 3rd part driver all of a sudden my data was coming across cleanly. Their driver costs some money, but the price is pretty reasonable at around $15 or so.

After thinking the adapter was about to be added to the electronics graveyard I stumbled across a 3rd party that makes drivers for the chipset in this adapter: They were adamant in their literature about how good their drivers were, but alas experimentation proved that the driver does not correctly output parity bits (at least not in 7 bit mode) and this causes the Fadal to throw 'parity errors' like crazy. I bought an adapter from 'Plugable' that has the Prolific PL2303HXD chipset: So far I've only been partially sucessful but I figured this information might be useful for other!

I'm also pretty cheap so I wanted to come up with a low cost Mac OSX DNC solution. I've read multiple places that USB-Serial adapters can be trouble, but I'm a foolish man and decided not to pay heed! Luckily I'm also persistent so I was able to muddle through and sort out a system that works.
